Panopticon or professional partner? Why two midwives in late second stage can reduce severe perineal trauma
As most high-income countries have seen an increase in severe perineal trauma during the past decade, this has caused a debate among all professions involved and a strong desire to do everything possible to reduce the risk. In the Oneplus trial the effectiveness of collegial midwifery assistance during the late second stage to reduce severe perineal trauma was evaluated.
Women who opted for their first vaginal birth were randomized and the results showed a significant protective effect. This presentation will focus on the challenges and opportunities of this preventive strategy for midwives and women. As the second stage is an intense period of the labour and birth process, also recognized as a transitional point of time between pregnancy and motherhood, this needs to be considered. Why is the intervention effective, how does it work and under which circumstances?
