Future conditional? How research on normal physiological labour and birth could underpin positive and safe childbirth experiences and outcomes
The rationale for the founding seminar for the Normal Labour and Birth research Conference (NLBC) series, held in the UK in 2001, was emerging evidence that labours and births recorded in maternity notes as being 'normal' actually involved a range of interventions. The question posed to that first seminar was, was this high rate of interventions always justified? Was it always what women wanted?. If not, how could these rates be safely reduced?. These questions remains on the agenda, more than 20 years later. Based on the outputs of the NLBC event held by Yale in 2021, Soo will summarise the NLBC Series over the previous 20 years, and will pose some of the key research and implementation questions that may need to be asked in this area over the next 20 years.
