Cesarean section rates are rising in most countries reducing the numbers of uncomplicated births. In Western countries highly qualified staff is present in most birth suites and the intrapartum fetal risk is overall low. Despite this, the cesarean section rate varies significantly between departments with same conditions. This entails a discussion of what influences the cesarean section rate. Is the healthcare professional’s opinion important? Is vaginal birth considered of value in itself? Are the staff trained well enough to support physiological labour and birth?

Kamilla Gerhard Nielsen will share the work from Aabenraa Hospital, where doctors and midwives share a strong belief that vaginal birth is important for the mother and the child as well as a good birth experience. The department has lowered their cesarean section rate mainly through teamwork, counselling of the women, and training of the staff.
